Restaurants are one of the hardest hit industries affected by the coronavirus shutdowns. Their only means of survival right now is takeout and delivery services. Google Maps has just introduced a new update that helps users find nearby restaurants that have takeout and delivery options, helping you find your favorite food and helping your favorite restaurants stay in business.
With the update, you'll now see two new buttons at the top of the screen under the search bar, "Takeout" and "Delivery". Clicking on Takeout will show you all the restaurants that allow you to pick up food outside of the restaurant while clicking Delivery will show you all the restaurants that will bring food to your door. And of course clicking on a restaurant on the map will bring up their info so you can call or visit their website to order (some delivery orders may be placed directly through their website while others may require you to order through DoorDash or another third party delivery service).
Supporting your favorite restaurants
According to the National Restaurant Association, early estimates indicate that up to 5 to 7 million restaurant workers may lose their jobs due to COVID-19. Many restaurants will never reopen. Large-scale support efforts have launched, like the National Restaurant Association's Restaurant Employee Relief Fund, and the Restaurant Strong Fund created by craft brewer Samuel Adams and the Greg Hill Foundation. What other restaurant industry support efforts do you know of? Do you fear some of your favorite spots will close permanently? Have you been ordering food for takeout or delivery since restaurants have been closed? Do you know industry people who have lost their jobs? Have they been able to get assistance?
